Following the Fear
In February I took a stand-up workshop with Comedian and Late Show with David Letterman Talent Coordinator Eddie Brill. He talked about how he likes to write on stage. In other words, saying what comes to mind, seeing what works, then refining it show after show. I thought that was an interesting way to approach the craft. I decided to start doing the same thing because I find that no matter how...

ZOMG! :0 I just texted what to who?
I often type out ideas for jokes into my phone. Unfortunately it’s not a smart phone and I don’t have a way to keep notes. So I start a text message to twitter, save it as a draft and usually copy the ideas to google docs at a later date. This usually works out well since I rarely tweet from my phone. This is an ass backwards way of keeping notes, but it works for me… scratch...

Stand-update! I was asked to open for Kumail Nanjiani’s Christmas Eve Eve show! I saw Kumail last year and thought he was amazing. I would never have guessed that I would get to do this! I had a really great time. I was also asked to be part of a Rooftop Comedy / Comedy Central Jokes.com showcase! This show will feature 15 comics doing 5 mins each. This show will be a lot of fun,...

Expertise
How do I calculate my hours? Any time I rehearse, practice, or perform I log it. I was hoping I could include the hours I’ve spent over the years making people laugh but, according to wikipedia, that wouldn’t be fair. expertise… comes about through long periods of deliberate practice. So that’s what I will do.  I will also record the hours I spend watching/analyzing...

Transitions! ¡Ay Dios Mio!
Last night during our Improv Slam post-mortem we were discussing the game we played called Serious Scene. I was called out for how I would leave/transition out of the scene. I would hang my head, hunch my shoulders and walk to the side of the stage. I’d been playing up the fact that I was “out” in a sad trombone way. It was explained that I should stay upbeat keep the energy...

PT Scarborough Is A Movie
Last night at DSI Comedy Theater I saw PT Scarborough Is A Movie. The show was amazing! Here’s a quick description of the show from DSI. Veteran improviser PT Scarborough does the unimaginable: completely overdubbing the soundtrack to a motion picture, live before your eyes. Based on films the audience has randomly chosen, PT takes to the stage by himself to spin whatever’s...

I recently finished 2 standup classes at DSI Comedy Theater in Carrboro. I’ve performed two student shows there, but this was my first attempt at standup at another club. I was the first to go, and only had two minutes to knock out some jokes, but I think it went well. They told me I should come back next week which is exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing where this comedy stuff takes me. Even...

I recently finished my first standup class at the DSI Comedy Theater in Carrboro, NC. I’ve found the exploration and process of comedy writing to be enormously gratifying. My first show went really well, better than I could have hoped. The theater was packed for both the Stand Up 101, and 201 graduation shows. I’m sure years from now I’ll be extremely embarrassed about this video, but right now I...
